In the quarter century since that fatal air crash, much has been presented to the world in the way of facts about the brief and brilliant career of Buddy Holly.
Yet at no point has anyone pooled the experiences, the memories and the opinions of those who were closest to him.
His family. The members of the Crickets. Fellow musicians on those pioneering rock and roll tours. People who came across him in all aspects of daily and musical life.
This film does just that. And, in putting the record straight, it paints an historic portrait charting his school life to the formation of the Crickets, the pilgrimage to Nashville with the fist 'demo' to the sell out tours of America, Canada and Europe.
Here also is historic film; the first recorded footage of Elvis Presley. Clips that capture Buddy, Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis in those early concerts. Paul McCartney playing and paying tribute ton one of his great influences. And those few precious television appearances Buddy made; performances of songs that still sound just as fresh today.
It is left to Keith Richard to say it for all of us: "Buddy Holly was the start of everything."
